About SaraJen Cattery

SaraJen Cattery
SaraJen Cattery was founded in 1989 in Westborough, Massachusetts, and moved to Arlington, Virginia in 1993. We raise exclusively Maine Coon Cats and our cattery is registered with both The International Cat Association (TICA) and Cat Fancier's Association (CFA).

Our cattery is inspected by a licensed feline-only veterinarian and has achieved the ratings of "Outstanding Cattery" with TICA and "Cattery of Excellence" with CFA. We voluntarily comply with TICA's Responsible Breeder Program. We are a long-standing breeder member of The Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association (MCBFA - an international, registry-independent breed organization dedicated to the maintenance and preservation of this wonderful breed) and voluntarily comply with its Breeder Code of Ethics.

Our intent is to raise healthy, beautiful, "typey," well-socialized kittens, whether they become winners in the show hall or beloved pets -- or both!

SaraJen Cats and Kittens
All our kittens are raised in our home and are handled and played with daily. All litters receive the proper inoculations and are examined by our veterinarian prior to going to their new homes. We guarantee our kittens are FeLV and FIV negative, and are in sound health when they leave our home. All kittens are placed with a written health record and guarantee.

Kittens are allowed to go to their new homes once they are twelve weeks old. However, if they are being shipped, they must be at least thirteen weeks old.

We are committed to breeding healthy and sound cats; therefore, we are screening our adults for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) via ultrasound and by gene tests, starting at approximately one year of age and then appropriately afterward. We also screen our cats for hip dysplasia.

While we strive to produce gorgeous show quality kittens, we will generally have beautiful pet companion kittens available as well. And at times, we have older (aged 2-4 years) retired show/breeder adults available for adoption.

What Our Cats and Kittens Look Like
We tend to produce brown, blue and red tabbies and torbies (tortoiseshell tabbies), with or without white markings. Depending on what breeding stock we are working with at any given time we may also have solid blacks, black and white bi-colors, silver tabbies and tortoiseshells.

Our adult Maine Coons are very much what you would expect with this breed: an average of 14-20 pounds for full-grown males and 10-14 pounds for full-grown females. Size is prized in this breed, but in our opinion sheer "poundage" should not be the key attribute you evaluate when looking for a Maine Coon to add to your family. Size should be a product of the sturdy boning of the cat as well as its solid musculature.  But, what really sets this breed apart is the Maine Coon temperament. They are generally very good-natured, friendly, loving, rather goofy at times, intelligent, sociable and gentle.

Please take a virtual tour of our cattery to see our breeding stock, both males and females. We think you'll agree that these cats have a beauty and presence that is quite striking and majestic. You may also want to check out the pictures of our recent litters (when available) to see how these "gentle giants" start out. In my not-so-humble and slightly prejudiced opinion, there is nothing cuter than Maine Coon kittens. Period.

Finding Maine Coon Cats and Kittens
There are numerous Maine Coon Cat breeders in the United States and Canada, and most are dedicated to the preservation and protection of this wonderful breed. We at SaraJen certainly welcome your inquiries about pet companions or show quality kittens or cats. We place many of our kittens locally in the Mid-Atlantic region, but we also ship out of state. We believe it is best for prospective owners to actually visit the cattery before purchasing a kitten, in order to be comfortable with the way the cats are maintained and how the kittens are being raised. Therefore, I urge anyone looking for a pet kitten to check with their local Maine Coon breeders first.

We are proud of our Maine Coons and our cattery and would be happy to have you visit if you are seriously considering a Maine Coon companion. We welcome inquiries from serious, responsible pet owners who will keep their kittens and cats safely indoors, protected from harm and undue stress, will provide regular veterinary care, will not de-claw their kittens and who agree to spay or neuter their pet kittens prior to nine months of age.
